The Apiculture Monitoring Report is compiled to ensure that MPI has a good understanding of emerging trends and issues facing the apiculture industry. This commentary was developed from information gathered through surveys completed by beekeepers, honey packers and exporters and augmented with a review of export documents, the apiary database and published reports. Honey production, price and expenses figures are based on a survey of a range of beekeeping enterprises that account for 40 to 50 percent of registered hives in New Zealand.
This report firstly provides a brief background to the issues regarding South Island Landless Natives (SILNA) land. The following review of the 2002 SILNA policy package includes the objectives and achievements of the package. A summary of the key issues raised during the hui and written submissions is provided. The report then includes discussion around the key issues, potential opportunities for SILNA forests and some future policy options for consideration by government.
This report describes the background physical and surface biological conditions at the time of the New Zealand IPY-CAML survey of the Ross Sea (February–March 2008), including distributions of water mass, water quality and sea ice.
This document describes the analysis conducted by MPI on various honey datasets to establish the high level characteristics for mānuka-type honey; the MPI-funded pilot research projects that help scope suitable characteristics for additional science projects; and the future science required to characterise both monofloral and multifloral mānuka honey.
Insect pollinated seed crops contribute at least NZ$60Million annually in export earnings. These crops are pollinated by a range of insects including honey bees, bumble bees, native bees and flies, and maintaining pollinator diversity can be important for maximising crop yields. However, different pollinators are active at different times of the day and under varying climatic conditions (activity windows).
This is chapter one of a technical report that supports New Zealand’s land-based production sectors by reviewing impacts and identifying climate change adaptation options. It is the first comprehensive evaluation of climate change, bringing together existing information while making some advances in knowledge surrounding climate change adaptation.
Under New Zealand food labelling rules, honey labels must include certain information to help the consumer know what they are buying. This fact sheet outlines the information that can appear anywhere on the label, front or back, but it has to be there.
